‘Leader of the Band’

‘My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man, I’m just a living legacy to the leader of the band’

Dan Fogelberg (August 13th, 1951 – December 16th 2007)

I think these words summarize what we are attempting to do as Christians. We really are just poor attempts to imitate the man, our ‘Leader of the band’, the Lord Jesus Christ. The beauty is, as long as we are giving it ‘The old college try’, God will be pleased with us. Yes, we will likely fall short of the standard Christ set in many ways. However, God knows the difference between those that are really trying and those that are coasting along counting on God and his grace to do all the work as they sit on their rear ends having a cigarette , drinking a beer, smoking crack, building a shed in their back yard,  etc., etc.

My point is, don’t live your life as though you really don’t have a role to play in your own salvation. Of course we are saved by the grace of God. Of course Jesus paid the price for our sins. There are a lot of ‘of courses’ we can speak of.

Whether we are sitting on the street watching the world go by or  killing time here on earth puttering in our back yards, it just doesn’t matter. One of my favorite lines in life is “Don’t just stand there, DO SOMETHING!!

For those that have chosen to ‘retire’ from the responsibilities of life or their job of 50 years, you may want to take a page out of the book of Doc Holliday from the movie ‘Tombstone’.  When asked by Johnny Ringo if he, like Wyatt Earp, was retired too, Doc responded by saying ‘Not me. I’m in my prime’.

Trust me, if you really want to do something constructive in the Kingdom of Heaven, the Lord has many ‘Career opportunities’ just waiting for you.

Glory be to God in the highest, and the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!

You’re Never Too Old

The Old Testament figure described as vigorous at an advanced age is Caleb, who was 85 years old when he requested and prepared to conquer the giant-inhabited hill country of Hebron. He famously declared to Joshua, “I am still as strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and for going and coming” (Joshua 14:11).

While Caleb is known for his great strength at 85, Moses is another prominent Old Testament figure who remained vigorous in his old age:

  • Called by God at 80: Moses was 80 years old when God first called him at the burning bush to confront Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt. His brother Aaron was 83.
  • Vigorous at 120: After decades of leading the Israelites through the wilderness, Moses died at the age of 120. The Bible states that “his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone” (Deuteronomy 34:7).
